CAMBRIDGE — Kisha Petticolas and Dion Banks of the Eastern Shore Network for Change (ESNC) unveiled the first poster in a series that honors Cambridge civil rights leader Gloria Richardson on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Dorchester County Center for the Arts.
The poster, titled “No To The Status Quo,” by artist Afua Richardson is an interpretation of the photograph of Gloria Richardson putting her hand up to ward off a National Guardman’s bayonet. Afua Richardson is an American illustrator best known for her work on the Eisner winning series Black Panther World of Wakanda.
“Kids want to learn this history,” said Banks, who stated that the ESNC has a mission to “do our homework and share our narrative.” With a three-fold goal of educating, increasing representation, and revitalization, ESNC created a curriculum about the civil rights struggle in Cambridge. Every year, ESNC helps bring students from World Leadership Schools to study that history.
Petticolas and Banks said that the poster is the first of at least 15 more pieces of art about Gloria Richardson and that they specifically wanted the first in the series to portray her reaction without showing the bayonet.
